2d. Patient Education

Most newly-diagnosed cancer patients don’t have any background knowledge in their specific type of cancer or the medical terminology associated with their treatment. While this can increase anxiety and fear for the patient, the nurse is available to make sure the patient understands everything related to their diagnosis and treatment. In addition to answering any specific patient questions, nurse navigators will provide education on:

Cancer Care Team
The cancer care team members and the role of each team member in the patient's care
Medical Tests
The tests providers have ordered, why each test is being done, and how the test is performed
Medications
Education on medications, their side effects, and ways to help minimize these side effects
