2c. Applying for Social Security

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal benefit for people who have paid into social security. This insurance is available to those who have disabilities that prevent them from working, including cancer. Applications for people with cancer may be fast tracked. A cancer patient may qualify for SSDI if the following criteria are met:

The patient worked for a number of years and had money taken out of his/her paycheck for Social Security (FICA).

If self employed, the patient paid self-employment taxes.

The patient meets Social Security’s strict definition of disability.
