3f. Prescription Benefits: Understanding Your Coverage & Alternative Prescription Options

Cancer treatment plans frequently include prescription medications. These medications are taken at home, as opposed to a medication administered at a healthcare facility, such as an infused chemotherapy drug. Cancer patients may have prescription drug coverage through their healthcare insurance plan, a secondary prescription drug plan, or Medicare Part D.

As with primary health insurance, patients should contact the prescription insurance provider to ask about medication coverage or alternatives to non-covered prescriptions. The cancer care team can provide information on alternative prescriptions as well.
